Starting Student Space Hardware Programs IV April 8, 2019 Mission Statement & Goals: To analyze the effects of the atmosphere on shielding the Earth’s surface from various harmful rays. To collect video, atmospheric radiation data, and information on the ozone, along with other sensory information to make an overall picture of the atmosphere’s function in shielding the planet.

Starting Student Space Hardware Programs IV April 8, 2019 Benefits to NASA: Our mission could help provide additional data to NASA about atmospheric radiation levels, and help correlate them to ozone levels at certain levels, along with temperature and pressure levels to approximate altitude. Our project could be developed into a more advanced computer that could take data more fluidly. NASA could launch a more accurate geiger counter, or even use different types of photodiodes to get more accurate and generally more data.

Starting Student Space Hardware Programs IV April 8, 2019 Design: Our project is centered around an ITX board, and its structure is a carbon fiber shell. The sensors are connected to HOBO data collectors, and the video is through the ITX board. Inside is also our battery.

Starting Student Space Hardware Programs IV April 8, 2019 Design: We allocated $1000 for our budget. As of today, we managed to make it under budget at $985. We were allowed 1500 grams for the weight of the project. However, extenuating circumstances with the weight of the carbon fiber drove the weight up slightly. We were over our estimate by 100 grams, primarily because of the lack of USB interface with our sensors, so we had to use HOBOs and because of the structure.

Starting Student Space Hardware Programs IV April 8, 2019 Expected Results: We expect to be able to use our data to draw conclusions about what happened on the flight up and how when the level of atmosphere changed, the level of radiation and ozone levels changed. Following this is some of our testing.

Starting Student Space Hardware Programs IV April 8, 2019 Expected Results: We also did some battery testing to make sure that our project could run long enough in flight. We have video from that testing, but since the video was taken of an inside of a refrigerator, we figured we wouldn’t include it, even though it is very scintillating. The battery lasted plenty long, and our memory card contained plenty of space.

Starting Student Space Hardware Programs IV April 8, 2019 Level of Readiness: We feel as if we are ready for launch, barring a few last minute tests and a few more things with the geiger counter. The only test that created any issue was the stair test, as it knocked our flash card out of the ITX board. This wasn’t an issue, as now it is taped on. Also, the structure showed no signs of cracks or fractures. The only thing that happened was some shifting of our load.
