Facts About Alcohol One alcoholic drink = .50 oz. of pure alcohol (ETOH) The only difference between beer, wine or liquor is the concentration of ETOH There are 165 servings in 1 keg Standard serving size Beer = 12 oz. Wine = 5 oz. Liquor (80-proof) = 1.5 oz. Punch = ? We are going to start off by going through some basic facts about alcohol. Some of you may know these things already but you can think of this as a good overview. Why do you think it is important for you as hosts/servers to know the basics about alcohol?

Server Roles & Responsibilities Must be sober! Be familiar with Rice alcohol policy and state laws Only certified alcohol servers may serve alcohol at public functions All servers must be at least 18 years old Access to unused alcohol must be restricted to servers and event hosts. Neither grain alcohol or punch containing alcohol is allowed University expectations: read and be familiar w/ policy, hold people (incl. yourself) accountable to policy Alcohol policy here to keep you safe Reasonable, Responsible, Respectful Why are you here? What are your expectations? What are the University expectations of you? How does your personal attitude and behavior regarding alcohol consumption affect your role?

Point of Service Check IDs, must be 21! (valid state ID, drivers license, passport) Check wrist band if applicable 1 drink per person If drink is not served in original container, it must be served in a clear container Do not serve a person who appears intoxicated Suspicious behavior: Returning for another drink in short amount of time Fake ID

Host Roles & Responsibilities Accountability: host is responsible for what happens at an event Must be present for the duration of the party Must be sober Make sure ID or wristbands are being administered properly and checked at the point of service Point of contact for RUPD, REMS, caregivers, security, servers, etc. Food/Water Uphold alcohol policy

Things for Hosts to Consider… Make sure to have enough food throughout the night. Stagger throughout the night Make sure food is substantial (not just chips and dip) Make sure to have enough water throughout the night. Who will be in charge of making sure water stations are full at all times? How many water stations are necessary depending on the size of the event? Does the AC need to be turned up? How to coordinate clean-up if there is broken glass or a spilled drink to make sure no one gets hurt.

Security All events must include a security plan RUPD will determine how many officers need to be present For large events, security plan should include consultation with appropriate program event liaison and RUPD Role of security: Preventing unauthorized persons from going behind the bar or causing a disturbance at the bar or elsewhere at the party. Ensuring that unauthorized alcohol is not brought into or removed from the event. Ensuring that visibly intoxicated individuals are not admitted or allowed to remain at event.

Safety If host, server, or security encounter difficulty enforcing the alcohol policy, they should contact RUPD.

Unused alcohol Provisions must be made for the disposal of unused alcohol from a registered party. Please make arrangements with appropriate program event liaison for storage of unused alcohol or disposal.

Rice Alcohol Policy It is illegal and against Rice Policy to drink if you are under 21. Rice sponsored graduate events with more than five students or greater than 10% student attendance must be registered within five business days using the following form: www.alcoholpolicy.rice.edu

Rice Alcohol Policy If someone is too intoxicated, call REMS at 713-348-6000. Both the caller and the person of concern will receive amnesty for any alcohol or drug use that preceded the call. This amnesty will not apply to prohibited conduct, such as violence, property damage, giving hard alcohol to underage peers, or distribution of dangerous substances.

Rice Alcohol Policy Serving hard alcohol is always banned in private spaces.

Certification All student hosts must review the alcohol policy and these training slides and complete the associated agreement indicating that that they have read and understand. For events with less than 50 students, servers must either be TABC certified (which can be obtained online) or review these training slides and complete the associated agreement indicating that that they have read and understand. For events with more than 50 students, servers must be TABC certified (which can be obtained online).
