Employment Discrimination I Suppose an American whose family immigrated from the former Belgian Congo runs a business and refuses to hire workers of Belgian descent, because of the horrible way Belgians treated people in the Congo during the colonial period. Has Congolese American employer done something wrong? If yes, should the law forbid such discrimination? Why? Suppose a white American who runs a business refuses to hire African Americans. Has the white employer done something wrong? If yes, should the law forbid such discrimination? Why? Suppose an employer asks all job candidates to take an IQ test and uses the IQ test in selecting applicants. Is that a problem? Is that something the law should forbid?

Employment Discrimination II Suppose a hospital had discriminated against women for many years, and, as a result, there are hardly any women doctors at the hospital. The Board of Directors is ashamed that the hospital discriminated for so long against female doctors and is embarrassed by the fact that such a small number of its doctors are female. To rectify the situation, the Board of Directors instructs those in charge of hiring to make sure that 50% of all newly hired doctors are female and to promote female doctors more quickly in order to ensure that female doctors are in senior positions as well as entry-level positions.
