RAFOS Float RAFOS is SOFAR, or Sound Fixing And Ranging, spelled backwards. This indicates the opposite direction of acoustic signaling. A SOFAR float sends out an acoustic signal that is picked up by a hydrophone array. A RAFOS float has a device onboard that listens for an acoustic signal produced by a moored sound source.
