Place zero at the center of each number line. Make sure it is the same for each number line. 2. Place each of the following statements as a point on the appropriate number line. You must define what it means and then you can describe the positive numbers (above or to the right of zero) and negative numbers (below or to the left of zero). For Celsius, 0° is where water freezes. Above zero, water gets warmer and below zero it gets colder. For money, 0 means you have none. A positive number means you have money and a negative number means you owe money. And the ocean’s surface is the starting point or zero for calculating the height of geographical features. Follow the directions and use the number line to mark each point you stop. 8. Move 7 steps to the right and stop. Now move 12 steps to the left and stop. What are the two places (points) on the number line you stopped? 9. Start at 0. Move 15 steps to the left. Now move 10 steps to the right. Now move 10 more steps to the right. What are all these points on the number line? 10. Every time you stop, what is your location compared to 0? Use this idea to define a point on the number line. Have one student demonstrate this in front of the room.
