Presentation transcript:

News from Room 211 Our Month What’s Coming Up Notices Mrs. Leary Month Ending January 31, 2019 Our Month What’s Coming Up Room 211 was full of activity in January. We came back from the December break and got right to work! In math, we have completed unit 3. Lots of concepts were packed into this unit: telling time, elapsed time, creating and analyzing pictographs and bar graphs, and using different units of measurements. The assessment was given. In Social Studies we researched colonial life. Students worked in small teams to research six different aspects of colonial life: education, recreation, occupations, food, shelter, and clothing. We also took a trip to Moose Hill for their colonial life program. In reading, we completed our study of informational texts. We worked on main idea and supporting details. In writing, we looked at text structure. We wrote “expert” chapter books. We also wrote short pieces about our colonial research. We are in the process of typing both pieces. We completed our study of motion in science. Our culminating activity was a STEM activity. We built carts that could travel a distance and, after testing them out, redesigned and rebuilt them. Late in the month, we started the weather unit. In conjunction with the holiday honoring Martin Luther King, we learned about Gandhi and how he was a great influence on Dr. King. We met with our learning buddies to learn more about Dr. King. We also made a “dream” quilt, expressing our dreams for the world. Math – Unit 4 is the month’s focus. We’ll concentrate on place value, rounding, and multi-digit addition and subtraction. Science – We’ll start our study of weather. This month we will about the water cycle. We will also examine how pressure affects weather. Social Studies – Students will create posters displaying their knowledge of colonial life. The posters will be shared with the class. ELA – We’ll complete our short informational pieces for the colonial life project. Next will be opinion writing. In reading, we have started the Character Studies unit. We are simultaneously working on the fable unit, as character traits figure are a key component of both.. Notices Thank you to Ms. Rivera and Mrs. Wulf for helping on the field. Report cards will go home on February 1st. Mrs. Leary Colonial Life
