Genes The part of DNA that determines a particular trait Each cell has 25,000-35,000 genes located on chromosomes in the nucleus.

Alleles Version of a gene that determines a characteristic, such as hair color Each parent donates ONE allele for each gene to an offspring (dominant or recessive)

Genotype The genetic makeup of an individual A description of the alleles possessed by an individual

Phenotype The physical trait (as a result of the genotype)

Gregor Mendel A scientist that discovered the principles of heredity while studying pea plants
