GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications Regulatory Update Transition to digital television, scheduled to be completed by February 17, 2009, will free 24 MHz of spectrum allocated for Public Safety uses (764-776 MHz and 794-806 MHz), . FCC Notice of Proposed Rulemaking on “The Development of Operational, Technical and Spectrum Requirements for Meeting Federal, State and Local Public Safety Communications Requirements Through the Year 2010” (WT Docket 96-86) released March 21, 2006. FCC seeks comment on whether certain channels within the current 24 MHz of public safety spectrum in the 700 MHz public safety band should be modified to accommodate broadband communications. Comments due June 2006. GSC: Standardization Advancing Global Communications

Congressional Activities $1,000,000,000 allocated to public safety agencies to purchase interoperable public safety communications systems. Funds will come from auctions proceeds for commercial spectrum freed by the digital television transition. Funds may be available as early as October 2006.
