Respiratory System Review

What is the main passageway into and out of the respiratory system? The nose

Breathing is done by a muscle called what? The diaphragm

Why do people with emphysema have trouble breathing? The alveoli have been destroyed

What is asthma caused by? Usually due to an allergy or a hypersensitivity to something in the environment

What is a common cause of lung cancer? Smoking

Are breathing and respiration the same thing? No

What are the 2 parts to respiration? Cellular respiration Breathing

What are the functions of the respiratory system? Supply oxygen to the blood Remove carbon dioxide from the blood

The pharynx branches into what? The esophagus The larynx

The traches branches into 2 tubes called what? Bronchi

Alveoli exchange what 2 gases? Oxygen Carbon dioxide

In the cells, oxygen combines with what to provide energy? Nutrients

Describe the pleura? Protects and cushions the lungs Has 2 layers The layers are separated by a space (pleural cavity)

What does pleural fluid do? Lubricates the pleural cavity Allows the layers to slide against each other

What happens in cellular respiration? Oxygen combines with glucose to produce Energy Water (waste product) Carbon dioxide (waste product)

Describe the vocal cords? A pair of elastic bands that stretch across the larynx. They vibrate when air flows over them, making sound.
