One whole 1 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Here we have one whole milk chocolate candy bar. And what is a fraction? A fraction is a part or a portion of the whole thing. We are using a HERSHEY’S milk chocolate bar as our whole thing.

12 One whole 1 = 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S How many individual sections are there in this candy bar? We have one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine, ten, eleven, and twelve. 12 sections make up one whole bar.

Eleven-Twelfths 11 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S One of the twelfths is now missing. There are now only eleven -twelfths left. Count them and see. Which is larger- one whole or eleven-twelfths?

Ten-Twelfths 10 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Two of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only ten-twelfths left. Count them and see. Which is larger- one whole or ten-twelfths?

Nine-Twelfths 9 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Three of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only nine -twelfths left. Count them and see. We can make this fraction smaller. There are three of the four sections left or three-fourths. Can you see the three larger sections that are left? This is called reducing.

Eight-Twelfths 8 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Four of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only eight -twelfths left. Count them and see. Can you make this fraction smaller by changing the bar into 2 sections. This would reduce to two-thirds.

Seven-Twelfths 7 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Five of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only seven - twelfths left. Count them and see. Which is bigger - 5/12 or 7/12? Why?

Six-Twelfths 6 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Six of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only six-twelfths left. Count them and see. Do you see that we now have one-half of the candy bar. Six-twelfths reduces to one-half.

Five-Twelfths 5 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Seven of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only five -twelfths left. Count them and see.

Four-Twelfths 4 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Eight of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only four-twelfths left. Do you see that we have one third of our candy bar remaining? Four-twelfths reduces to one-third. Which would you rather have - 4/12 or 1/3? Why?

Three-Twelfths 3 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Nine of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only three -twelfths left. Count them and see. Do you see that we have one-fourth of our candy bar remaining? Three-twelfths reduces to one-fourth.

Two-Twelfths 2 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Ten of the twelfths are now missing. There are now only two-twelfths left. Count them and see. Do you see that we have one-sixth of our candy bar remaining? Two-twelfths reduces to one-sixth.

One-Twelfth 1 12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Eleven of the twelfths are now missing. There is now only one-twelfth left. Count it and see. Which would you rather have one-twelfth or eleven-twelfths? Why?

Can you show Six-Twelfths? One Whole HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Can you show Six-Twelfths?

What is this fraction reduced? Six-Twelfths 6/12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S What is this fraction reduced?

Can you show Four-Twelfths? One Whole HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Can you show Four-Twelfths?

What is this fraction reduced? Four-Twelfths 4/12 HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S What is this fraction reduced?

Can you show Three-Twelfths? One Whole HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S HERSHEY’S Can you show Three-Twelfths?
