Physical and Chemical Changes
Matter is... everywhere. anything that takes up space and has mass. constantly experiencing both chemical and physical changes.
Physical changes occur when matter changes its property, but not its chemical nature.
Physical property changes could include a change in: texture shape size color odor volume mass weight density
Physical Change
Chemical Change Chemical changes are changes that matter undergo when it becomes new or different matter.
To identify a chemical change look for signs such as: color change bubbling and fizzing light production smoke presence of heat
Chemical Change Example: A chemical change occurs when fireworks are used. Fireworks are made of metals such as magnesium and copper. These change chemically as they light up the sky.

To figure out what type of change is happening: physical or chemical? Purpose: To figure out what type of change is happening: physical or chemical?
MATERIALS: 2 tablespoons baking soda ¼ cup vinegar 1 balloon 1 bottle funnel
**Your team will decide together HYPOTHESIS: If baking soda and vinegar and combined in a container sealed by a balloon, then ___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________. **Your team will decide together what to write
PROCEDURE: Pour vinegar into the graduated cylinder. Stretch open the balloon mouth and using your notecard funnel carefully pour the 2 tablespoons of baking soda into the balloon Carefully stretch the balloon mouth over the bottle. Make sure the balloon mouth is tightly around the neck of the bottle. Hold the balloon to the side so that the baking soda does not fall into the vinegar. Now, be ready to watch! Shake the balloon carefully so that it stays attached to the bottle, but so that the baking soda falls into the bottle.
Observations: Draw a picture of observations of what happened to the balloon after the substances were mixed together. LABEL YOUR DRAWING.
Conclusion: What kind of change(s) took place? How do you know?
