A Look at Density and How to Calculate It

Remember… VOLUME = amount of space something takes up MASS = amount of matter in an object (the “stuff” inside)

Remember… VOLUME is measured in milliliters (mL) or in cubic centimeters (cm³) MASS is measured in grams (g)

Remember… VOLUME is the amount of space you have and…. MASS is how much of something you have.

Bring it Together: Density is a combination of volume and mass. Density is the amount of matter in a given volume. The amount of “stuff” in a certain “space”

Definition of DENSITY: The RATIO of the mass of a substance to the space it takes up (volume) Substances have a characteristic density Determined by how compact the atoms are inside: solids have high densities gases have low densities

Can you think of an exception to this rule?

Figuring it Out There is a mathematical formula for calculating density: Density = Mass ÷ Volume D = M V

Units for Density Just like length, volume and mass, density has to be labeled with the correct unit… g/cm³ or g/mL is the standard unit for density. 1cm³ = 1mL

Let’s Practice! Liquid E had a mass of 82.61g and a volume of 100mL Plug it into the formula…

Let’s Practice! D = M ÷ V 82.61g 100mL D = .8261 g/mL

Will it Float? Density can predict if something will float. How?

Will it Float? The density of water is 1 g/mL. The object with a higher density than water will sink. Think of some examples…

It Floats If it has lower density it will float. Think of some examples…
