Five chromosome segregation in polar bodies and the corresponding oocyte  M. Cristina Magli, Cristina Grugnetti, Eleonora Castelletti, Barbara Paviglianiti, Anna P. Ferraretti, Joep Geraedts, Luca Gianaroli  Reproductive BioMedicine Online  Volume 24, Issue 3, Pages 331-338 (March 2012) DOI: 10.1016/j.rbmo.2011.11.019 Copyright © 2011 Reproductive Healthcare Ltd. Figure 1 Chromosome analysis in first polar body (PB1), second polar body (PB2) and fertilized oocyte with the probes specific for chromosomes 13 (red), 16 (aqua), 18 (pink), 21 (green) and 22 (yellow). (A) PB1 has only one yellow dot, indicating a missing chromatid 22, and (B) PB2 is euploid, predicting an oocyte with an extra chromatid for chromosome 22. (C) The analysis of the fertilized oocyte shows one pronucleus euploid for the five chromosomes (upper nucleus) and the other with an extra dot for chromosome 22 (lower nucleus), indicating a condition of trisomy 22. Figure 2 Chromosome analysis in first polar body (PB1), second polar body (PB2) and fertilized oocyte with the probes specific for chromosomes 13 (red), 16 (aqua), 18 (pink), 21 (green) and 22 (yellow). (A) PB1 has only one aqua and pink dot, indicating a missing chromatid 16 and 18 respectively, and (B) PB2 has an extra aqua dot, predicting an oocyte with an extra chromatid for chromosome 18. (C) The analysis of the fertilized oocyte shows one pronucleus with an extra dot for chromosome 18 (left nucleus) and the other (right nucleus) euploid for the five chromosomes, indicating a condition of trisomy 18. The sequential errors for chromosome 16 in PB1 and PB2 compensated for the defect and the oocyte was euploid for chromosome 16.
