Today we will be learning to: understand and use multiplication as repeated addition recognise and interpret situations as multiplication develop strategies to multiply a one-digit number up to 5 by 2, 3, 4 or 5 use the ‘x’ symbol.

Mental Activity Today you will count on and back in different steps. I will give you a sequence. You will have to complete it.

Today you will also practise your rapid recall of multiplication. I will give you some multiplication questions to solve. If you can’t remember the answer, count on and solve it.

Main Activity Today we are going to be using the relationship between repeated addition and multiplication to work out a problem.

How many legs does a dog have?

How many legs do 2 dogs have? What would the number sentence be?

How many legs do 3 dogs have? What would the number sentence be?

How many legs do 4 dogs have? What would the number sentence be?

Top Tip The symbol ‘x’ means multiplication. ‘x’ is quicker to write than repeated addition.

How many shoes would ten monsters and twenty monsters need? Group Work How many shoes would ten monsters and twenty monsters need? Work out how many shoes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6 and 7 monsters would need.
