Counterargument and Concluding Paragraphs English 7

Counterargument Paragraph Argumentative essays require a counterargument paragraph that explains the other side’s position The idea is to present the other side’s position and then destroy it (with evidence)!  Tip: Use the phrase “some people say” to start the counterargument paragraph.

For the Shrek example Some people say Shrek is not a hero because he is often antisocial. This argument is incorrect because Shrek does not choose to be an isolationist but is forced to live on his own by people not accepting him into society. Instead of rebelling against society, he continues to treat people nicely and fairly which is very heroic.

Concluding Paragraph The goal of a conclusion is to make the reader continue thinking about the paper after finishing reading it. To do this, a conclusion must: Restate your thesis Sum up your main points

Concluding Paragraph A helpful hint: try the “circle technique.” Writers using this method end their papers with the same or similar thoughts they began the paper with (their attention getter).

NEVER Add new information in your conclusion. If it wasn’t important enough to say in the body of your paper, don’t say it in your conclusion!

For our Shrek example: Clearly, Shrek from the DreamWorks film Shrek is an epic hero. He risks his life by going on a quest and fighting dangerous monsters just to save Princess Fiona. Through his entire journey, he stays true to himself.
