Drill: What is the basic unit for measuring numbers of particles?

Objective: The student will be able to: Use the periodic table in order to calculate the molar mass (gram formula mass) of a compound.

SAT/HSA Enrichment An aqueous substance is best described as… a gas bubbling out of a solution. A substance that contains water in its solid form. An insoluble material. A solid at the bottom of a solution. A solution in which water is the solvent.

Molar Mass Calculating Molar Mass Pre-Assessment 10 Min

Molar Mass Pass all pre-assessments forward. The class will check each other’s pre-assessments.

MOLAR MASS GAME Materials: Periodic Table Objective: Students are to use the periodic table to identify chemical symbols that will form a word when combined. Subscripts should be used for double letters. After constructing the words using the periodic table the students will calculate the molar mass of the compounds or words.

MOLAR MASS GAME Goal: Students will complete the activity to see which team can identify the Longest “word compounds” Heaviest “word compounds”

MOLAR MASS GAME Example: Symbol for iron-Fe Symbol for argon- Ar Put them together to spell FeAr (Fear) Molar mass = Fe (56) + Ar (40) = 96 g/mol

MOLAR MASS GAME Rubric: Words 5 letters or less – 1 pt Words 6 letters or more – 2 pts Words 150 g/mol or less – 1 pt Words 151 g/mol or more – 2 pts

MOLAR MASS GAME Participation Rubric This is a group/team activity. Each of your team members will be grading you for your effort in helping to complete the task. Your grade will be determined by taking the average of your group members grade for you!

How many words can your TEAM create in 30 min! Let’s Go! How many words can your TEAM create in 30 min!

Winner Who is the winner of the game! Let’s see who the winner is! Complete the Group Participation Rubric
