Biblical Covenants

Biblical Covenant “A covenant is an unchangeable, divinely imposed legal agreement between God and man that stipulates the conditions of their relationship” Wayne Grudem, Systematic Theology p.515 Agreement - 2 parties Divinely imposed - no negotiation Unchangeable - can be superseded or replaced but not changed

The 8 Biblical Covenants

The 8 Biblical Covenants The Edenic Covenant (Gen. 1:28–30; 2:16, 17) is Jehovah’s declaration that sets out the conditions the life of unfallen man on the earth. The Adamic Covenant (Gen. 3:14–19) conditions man’s life on the earth after the fall. Much that is in this covenant is perpetual throughout all generations until the curse is lifted from creation (Rom. 8:19–23). The Noahic Covenant (Gen. 8:20–9:27) discloses the divine intent respecting human government and posterity in all succeeding generations beginning with Noah.

The 8 Biblical Covenants Abrahamic Covenant (Gen. 12:1–3; 13:14–17; 15:1–18; 17:1–8) This covenant guarantees everlasting blessings upon Abraham, his seed, and all the families of the earth. The Mosaic / Old Covenant (Ex. 20:1–31:18) which is in three parts: the commandments - directed the moral life of Israel the judgments - directed the social life of Israel the ordinances - directed the religious life of Israel and imposed penalties for every failure. Its blessings were made to depend on human faithfulness.

The 8 Biblical Covenants The Palestinian Covenant (Deut. 30:1–9) discloses what Jehovah will yet do in regathering, blessing, and restoring Israel to her own land. The Davidic Covenant (2 Sam. 7:5–19) secures three paramount advantages to Israel through the Davidic House, namely, an everlasting throne, an everlasting kingdom, and an everlasting King to sit on David’s throne. The New Covenant (Jer. 31:31–34; Heb. 8:7–12) which covenant is “new” in the sense that it supersedes as a rule of life the Mosaic Covenant that Israel broke.

The Unconditional Covenants that God made with Israel 1. they are literal covenants and their contents must be interpreted literally as well. 2. they are eternal and are not in any way restricted or altered by time. 3. because the covenants are unconditional and totally dependent upon God for fulfillment, their ultimate fulfillment can be expected. 4. these covenants were made with a specific people: Israel.

Romans 9:4 who are Israelites; whose is the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the promises.

Ephesians 2:11–12 Wherefore remember, that once ye, the Gentiles…. that ye were at that time separate from Christ, alienated from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of the promise, having no hope and without God in the world.

The Sinaitic / Mosaic Covenant Abrahamic Covenant secures for the nation of Israel the Land for ever The Sinaitic / Mosaic Covenant gave Israel the standards of conduct serves as a tutor to lead us to Christ The Palestinian Covenant gave Israel conditions for enjoying the land The Davidic Covenant gave Israel her King The New Covenant secures for Israel national eternal blessing provides personal salvation for every believer
