Student Accessibility Services Student accessibility Services (SAS) role is to help prevent faculty and the University be in compliance with the ADAAA of 2008 and Section 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act. SAS wants to ensure full and comprehensive access to the Universities services, programs and resources so students with disabilities are able to obtain information fully, equally and indecently in a comparable manner to that of an individual who does not have a disability.

Need for Closed Captioning Rapid growth of lecture captures and online distance education ADAAA has provided a guide to Website Accessibility Under Title II of the ADA “Public Entities” The Americans with Disabilities Act (all media used or purchased by public agencies receiving federal/state funds MUST be ADA) and Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act requires accessible Captioned material not only complies with ADA law, but Universal Design. Increase in the number of OCR cases and law suits

Captioning Proposal Course content, lecture capture, online classes and media displays around campus and on websites are all liabilities for the University Hybrid Solution: SAS has conducted research to find out what other colleges and universities within the SUS system and out of state to see what would be the best approach to meet the needs of accessibility. 1st

Hybrid Approach Best solution to meet with the demands and cost of closed captioning. Combination of both a caption appliance and a captioning service to generate captions Increased versatility. Can address any caption file format and any display type. Can distribute captioning ability to different departments/areas with different levels of expertise. Can create student employment opportunities for caption editors – Captioning Interns. Initial costs will be high Time to fully implement a plan that ensures all media content is captioned First step must be to provide timely captioning of media content for students who are registered with SAS A notification to faculty & staff Second step should be to create a process for the implementation of captioning in course design, lecture capture and media displays
