FRUIT POWER! By: Lily Marriott

Scientific Question Which fruit can produce power to the largest amount of light bulbs?

Background The reason why I chose this topic is that last summer at a camp called GRASP(from the OSU Department of Physics), we learned about power circuits. I learned that a lemon can produce power with just a battery and aluminum foil to power a small lightbulb. So I thought that if a lemon could produce power, so can other CITRUS fruits.

Hypothesis If I test to see how many light bulbs a citrus fruit can power, then I think a pumello can power the most amount of 2.

Variables Independent: Different Fruits Dependent: Light bulbs that light up Controlled: Copper wire, screws

Materials 1 lemon, 1 pummelo, 1 grapefruit, 1 orange, 1 lime, copper wire, galvanized zinc nail/screw, multiple(small)light bulbs,aluminum foil.

Procedure 1. Gather materials 2. Take foil and roll it up in a stick form 3. Take copper wire and insert the wire inside the fruit 4. Repeat step 2, two more times 5. Insert nail inside the fruit 6.Attach the foil to the ends of the wire & nail

Procedure Page 2 7. Attach light bulb to the foil with tape 8. Repeat step 6 until light bulbs go out 9. Repeat steps 2-6 with the different fruits(lemon, orange, lime, grapefruit, pumell o)

Data Type of Fruit Amount of Light-Bulbs Powered Lemon Lime Orange Lime Orange Grapefruit Pumello

Conclusion If I tested to see how many light-bulbs a citrus fruit could power, it can't. I tried many ways to power the light-bulb but none of the procedures worked. All of the fruits could not power enough energy to the light-bulb. My hypothesis was that a grapefruit could power the most light-bulbs but, none of the fruits could power 1. I learned that there will be

many times that an experiment will work the first time, but not the next time. I would try to find another way to power the light- bulb. My error was that the lab did not work.
