Presentation transcript:

Characteristics of Life Things that possess all of these qualities are living.

Cells All living things are made of one or more cells. Unicellular organisms consist of one cell. Multicellular organisms consist of more than one cell.

Reproduction All living things can produce new life. Asexual reproduction involves the individual making a clone of itself. Sexual reproduction involves a male and female cell combining to make a new individual.

Growth and Development Individuals can grow larger. New tissues can be created.

Obtain and Use Energy EAT BREATHE WASTE All living organisms obtain and use energy. Autotrophs change energy from the sun into the energy in food. Heterotrophs must get their energy from another source. EAT BREATHE WASTE

Respond to Environment Living things react to stimulus. Examples: Trees lose leaves in winter. Animals shed in spring/summer. Humans shiver when cold and sweat when hot.
