Multiplying radicals

Multiplying radicals When you multiply radicals, you just have to remember that there are innies and outies. The outies can be multiplied together, the innies can be multiplied together, but you can’t mix an innie and an outie. However, if you can simplify the radicals and move an innie or its factor outside, then you can multiply this new outie by any existing outies.

Multiplying radicals The outies get multiplied and the innies get multiplied.

Distributing radicals

F.O.I.L.ing radicals Case 1: Nothing combines

1 + 3 = 1 + 3 1x + 3y = 1x + 3y Combining radicals Combining radicals is just like combining like terms. If the numbers under the radicals are NOT the same, you CANNOT combine the terms. 1 + 3 = 1 + 3 1x + 3y = 1x + 3y

Simplifying to combine radicals If the numbers under the radicals are NOT the same, but when you simplify the radicals they become the same, then you can combine them.

If you can combine like terms, you can combine radicals!
