What is poetry? Why do people create poetry? Poetry is natural expression of human emotions. It is written in lines, and rhymed(压韵的).

Ask yourself Can you still think out some famous poets either in China or in foreign countries? List their most famous poems. You can either use Chinese or English. Who is your favorite?

Pre-reading Li Bai (701-762 A.D.), a famous Chinese poet in Tang Dynasty (P44) 1882美国诗人Dr. Clement Clarke Moore第一次把Santa Clause(圣诞老人)描写出亲切可爱的形象:面颊像玫瑰,鼻子似樱桃,常常欢乐笑靥,两鳃长满白胡子,每逢圣诞前便会驾着驯鹿雪橇来到村镇里,从民居烟囟爬下,送礼物给乖孩子。谁知这篇名为A visit from Saint Clause的诗文一经发表便到处风行,使快乐的圣诞老人形象深入人心。很多小孩想知道他究竟来自何方。

Words used to describe the moon in the poem: bright, hoarfrost Words used to describe the appearance of Santa Claus: Oval eyes, merry face, rose cheeks, cheery nose, cute little mouth, beard and moustache as white as snow.

Read again and answer the questions 1.When approximately do you think then poems were written? Poem A was written in the 700s and Poem B was written in the 1800s. 2.What is the tone of the two poems? Poem A is sad and sentimental while poem B has a cheerful lively tone.

3.What is poem A about? It conveys the poet’s sadness at being far away from his home and family. 4.What is poem B about? It is about the night before Christmas when Santa visits each house.

Language Appreciation in these two poems: The words are put in an inverted order by the rules of modern grammar. He gave a nod and up the chimney he rose. (fully inverted sentence) He gave a nod and he rose up the chimney.

Absolute structure(独立结构) Head bent, in homesickness, I am drowned. Eyes raised, I see the moon so bright. With my head bent, I am lost in homesickness. With my eyes raised, I see the moon so bright.

Images and description Everything was quiet. The children were excited about getting presents. Nothing was moving, not even a mouse. While vague dreams of presents danced in their heads.

Images and description It is night time and there is a full moon. He was hard-working and didn’t want to waste any time. I see the moon so bright. He didn’t speak a word and went straight to work.

Post-reading: thinking! The poems are similar in some ways and different in others. List four ways that show they are similar and four ways that show they are different. Similar: The poems are both about a special night; Different: Poem A is older than Poem B
