Presentation transcript:

Define “Manifest Destiny” based on the quote below: Our manifest destiny is to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions. America is destined for better deeds. We have no interest in the scenes of antiquity, only as lessons of avoidance of nearly all their examples. The expansive future is our arena, and for our history. We are entering on its untrodden space, with the truths of God in our minds, beneficent objects in our hearts, and with a clear conscience unsullied by the past. We are the nation of human progress, and who will, what can, set limits to our onward march? Providence is with us, and no earthly power can. We point to the everlasting truth on the first page of our national declaration, and we proclaim to the millions of other lands, that "the gates of hell" -- the powers of aristocracy and monarchy -- "shall not prevail against it." Who, then, can doubt that our country is destined to be the great nation of futurity? - John O’Sullivan Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US? Belief that it was God-given obligation to rule all land between Atlantic and Pacific Coasts in North America Coast to coast empire Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US? Why we had this belief? Things were going good/ nationalistic cockiness Quick territorial expansion with La. Purchase, etc. US expanding so quickly that God must be on our side! US way of life (culture, religion, govt etc.) was so special that the world would be better if we spread it!! (American Exceptionalism) It was our duty to spread our culture White man’s burden Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US? Euphemism Reality of Manifest Destiny? A nice word for IMPERIALISM We had to conquer others to achieve Manifest Destiny Forcing our way of life on others S- culture P-democracy E- capitalism/ exploitation of resources R- Christianity M- Mexican War Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

“American Progress”-John Gast What do you notice in the picture? What is the overall point of the painting? Does this painting portray Manifest Destiny as a positive or negative? How does it relate to the quote from the do now? Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

Problems in achieving Manifest Destiny We have to take it from others!! Mexico owned most of the land England claimed Oregon and had Canada Russia claimed part of Oregon Natives are living throughout the territory US not a military force, so how could we get it and defend it!!! We had to get people to move out there if we do ever get it! Many in Northeast didn’t want the land-future problems!!!! Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

Positives in achieving Manifest Destiny Communication/technological advances Roads/railroads/telegraph Immigrants pouring in to US caused overcrowding in the east, so people wanted to move west Not many people living in the area we wanted!! Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?

Polk,  11th President (1845-49) Aim: How did Manifest Destiny affect the US?
