Writing is incorporated into the Reading Street program Writing is incorporated into the Reading Street program. During their independent work, the students have various writing activities they complete.

Mrs. Allaben is your child’s math teacher Mrs. Allaben is your child’s math teacher. She uses the Everyday Math 4 program for instruction. Our math block is 90 minutes long and follows a small group instruction model. Students will continue to have math facts on a weekly basis for homework and a quiz grade.

Ms. Allaben is your child’s science teacher as well Ms. Allaben is your child’s science teacher as well! We begin science instruction with Scientific Method. We will then move into cells, classification of living things, the solar system, Earth’s changing surface and heredity and traits. Assessments will be open note or a study guide will be provided. STEM activities are also incorporated into the science instruction.

We use the Reading Street program  Our language arts block consists of 30 minutes of whole group instruction and 60 minutes of small group instruction/independent work. Within our small groups, we focus on the leveled readers and the Sleuth magazine. We also will be working on creating an interactive notebook that reinforces the skills and strategies covered in Reading Street.

Social Studies is somewhat of a new subject for the students Social Studies is somewhat of a new subject for the students. We are currently easing into basic map skills (map key/legend, longitude/latitude, compass rose, cardinal directions, 7 continents/4 oceans, etc). Native Americans, explorers, colonial America, and Revolutionary War are the other units we cover.

Students will have homework assigned every night (unless noted) Students will have homework assigned every night (unless noted). The homework assignments are posted on our websites. Homework PowerSchool for Parents

TECHNOLOGY During this school year, SAU 19 is introducing Google Docs to students in K-8. Google Docs is an application in which documents and spreadsheets can be created, edited, and stored on-line. Google Drive allows students to collaborate with teachers and other students on educational assignments electronically. Permission to opt-in to this initiative will be coming home will be sent home within the next week. We will be using Google Docs for activities such as writing, spreadsheets, presentations, and creative products. Teachers will be able to comment and edit student work on-line! It will allow students to work on assignments begun at school at home.
