The Declaration of Independence

The Declaration of Independence- pp.153-156 1. What natural rights does Jefferson include? How do we define these natural rights? Is this a “radical” idea? 2. Why does Jefferson blame the King, rather than Parliament throughout the document? 3. What grievances seem to be the most offensive? Based on the grievances that are included in the document, briefly state what new rights will be guaranteed by the American government. Why? 4. What specific parts of the Declaration apply today? Be prepared to give examples.

The Slave Trade Grievance- p.156 1. How might this addition to the Declaration impacted the course of human history? 2. Give evidence from the document that places the blame of slavery on the King. 3. Why would Jefferson, a slaveholder, attempt to include this statement into the Declaration of Independence?
