Tackling the New Generation Science Standards and the Common Core Standards Julie Dietz & Denise Aiani March 9, 2017

Shifts (Check out...“NGSS Overview for Principals”) What are the shifts? 3-D learning -Scientific and Engineering Practices (SEP’s), Disciplinary Core Ideas (DCI’s) and Crosscutting Concepts (CCC’s) How will this look different in the classroom? An interrelated world of inquiry that offers teachers a potential way to connect to a real-world phenomenon. How can teachers increase engagement? Systems thinking modeling; investigations, debates, discussions with guidance , open- ended questions, evidence- based answers; multiple sources , student journals and media presentations

What qualities does a 21st Century Educator need to achieve? Anticipates the future Lifelong Learner Fosters peer relationships between students Teaches and assesses all different types of learners Identifies effective vs. noneffective technology

NGSS Questions Guide the Instruction Did the root system grow this way because of the environment or genetic reasons? What do you know about the ground trees sit on? Might the roots grow differently on different ground? What design changes could you make to this sidewalk so the tree roots could access water more effectively? How do trees in urban settings differ from trees in rural settings?

Stay with the NGSS Questions HUMAN ACTIVITY How do we affect the environment? How does the environment affect our daily lives?

How are humans affecting the environment? Close Reading, Cause and Effect, Reading Strategies How are humans affecting the environment?

Text Complexity Activity 1st Read: Confusion 2nd Read: Key Details 3rd Read: Text Dependent Questions

The NGSS Questions guides evidence searches Cause and Effect Essays True and False Activities that Require Evidence How are humans affecting the environment? Research Essays requiring three sources. Text Dependent Questions Mini-Debates exploring issues of the environment

How is the land changing the environment? The NGSS Questions Determine Exploration How is the land changing the environment? Wind Erosion ROCK CYCLE 3-D Drought Graphs STREAM TABLES

What are some ways that your school site has learned to build community and foster leadership among the students?

NGSS Questions facilitate cooperation and communication Kindergarten Teams Repeating Investigations Improve Behavior Cross-Curricular Studies deepen conversations and knowledge Project-Based Learning requires initiative, problem-solving, and collaboration.

Where do we start?

What is a realistic time frame to teach so many standards?

Practically Speaking E.L.L. Remedial Readers Behavior Issues CHAMPS DOJO Kindergarten Teams Leveled Recess Specific Checklist/Goals Project-Based Classwork Project-Based Homework Leadership Teams Open-Ended Investigations Read Live Conferences Many Exposures to Content Moby Max Individualized Routes Speaking Frames; Academic Journals; Debates Kindergarten Teams; Investigations E.L.L. Remedial Readers Behavior Issues Passive Learner

Why do Teachers Need Protected Time? Creating Science Investigations Facilitator of Technology for Students Formulating Questions More adaptations for learners with special needs Sharing links and offering digital discussions Collaboration and connectivity across classrooms, schools, communities and the world. Learner-Centered classroom supporting all learning styles.

How do we simplify Project-Based learning & STEM investigations? Use the same rubric for every project. Offer choices on projects so students become experts. Develop a set of school-wide STEM projects to develop rapport & routines. Integrate grade levels in STEM to accomplish investigations.
