What Kind of Questions 5 W’s and an H. Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How

Examples Who committed the crime? What will the main character do at the restaurant? When will the main character finally call the police? Where is the school located? Why didn’t the main character tell his mom about the burglar? How will the main character get away from the bad guy?

Your turn Look at this picture. Can we make a questions for 5 W’s and an H?

Lets Try Again Talk to your partner to come up with questions for this painting.

On Your Own Who What When Where Why How In your reading journal, write at least three questions for this piece of art. The questions must all start with a different word! Who What When Where Why How

Now Let’s Try with Literature Click on the book to read a the short story The Little Pink Rose. While reading, try to come up with three questions to share with your class. Teachers, use the following link for more activities and a graphic organizer to go with the literature http://www.lakeshorelearning.com/media/images/free_resources/teachers_corner/lesson_plans/3_4/lessonReadAskingQuestionsFull.pdf

How Else does it Apply? Here is a short video on using the strategy “asking and answering questions.” In this lesson, you will learn to analyze character motivations by noticing a character’s actions and asking, “Why did that character just do that?” Click the pig below to get started.

Closing Tell the classmate next to you one thing you learned about asking and answering questions. How will you use this strategy next time you are reading independently?
