Do Now Identify one person in your life that you look up to. Now, provide one reason for why you look up to that person.

AIM and Agenda AIM: How is your response to a question determined? Do Now INM: Identify vs. Explanation Act 1: Individual Practice Brainstorming: Factors Act 2: Taking it to the Regents Act 3: Show Down Wrap it up!

INM: “Identify” When a question asks you to “identify”, your response should: Tell or indicate what or who something is When it comes to a graph or diagram, you would identify: What the graph/diagram is showing? What do you see happening?

INM: “Explanation” When a question asks you to explain or give a reason, your response should: Tell why you think this is happening You are answering the “because” part. This is happening because…

Modeling: Example 1 Due to the rapid increase in the human population, more forests are being cut down. Consequently, the biodiversity in these forest ecosystems dramatically decreases. Q: Identify the relationship between deforestation and biodiversity. Q: Provide one reason for this relationship?

Modeling: Example 2 What does this graph show? Explain why there is an increase in wireless telephone users.

Activity 1: Practice, Practice, Practice! Directions: For each graph: Identify what is being illustrated Provide a explanation or reason for what is happening You will have 5 minutes to complete this activity

Activity 2: Taking it to the Regents! Directions: Take a look at each question and lets see if it is asking for you to “identify” or “provide an explanation”

Regents Question 1:

Regents Question 2

Regents Question 3

Regents Question 4 1. Identify the relationship between population size and time. 2. What population does this represent? 3. Provide one reason for why this is happening?

Reasons for Population Increase In each of these questions, it was important that you knew the reason why the population was increasing or decreasing. Let’s brainstorm some reasons why a population will decline or increase.

Reasons: Change in Population Increase: Decrease:

Activity 3: Show Down Directions: Make sure that EACH person in your group has the following materials: White board Marker Eraser Additionally, at each group there should be a set of questions.

Rules: 1. EVERYONE will read a question. 2. Do NOT show your answers to your group members until you hear the reader say “Showdown!” 3. You cannot move onto the next question unless everyone got the right answer. **If someone did not get the right answer, it is the job of the other members of the group to teach that person.

Wrap it up!
