March’s Activity of Daily Living Meal Preparation

Activities of Daily Living or ADL’s “Activities of Daily Living” are tasks people complete in their daily routine to function independently, e.g. dressing, bathing, cooking, and cleaning. This presentation will address the ADL of: Meal Preparation. Please consult with Wellness Center staff for personal instruction on how to complete the given exercise examples.

Meal Preparation Preparing a meal requires standing, bending, reaching, carrying, and holding objects. Strengthen the muscles of the: Lower body – to stand and bend down. Upper body – to reach for and carry objects. Hands & Fingers – to pick up & manipulate objects . Core – to maintain posture and support the back while standing.

Lower Body Exercises Activity: Standing or bending down to get into lower level cabinets or drawers. Exercises/Muscles: Squats: Legs, Glutes, & Core Squats

Upper Body Exercises Activity: to carry or reach for supplies from any level. Exercises/Muscles: Upright Rows Back/Shoulders Upright Row

Arm Exercises Activity: to lift and carry objects, or stir a mixing bowl by hand. Exercises/Muscles: 1) Arm Curl Biceps Starting Position Exertion
