TYPES OF HOUSES

DETACHED HOUSE a house that stands alone

SEMI-DETACHED HOUSE a house that is attached to something on only one side

TERRACED HOUSE / US ROW HOUSE / TOWN HOUSE a house that is joined to the houses on either side of it by shared walls

MOBILE HOME / TRAILER / CARAVAN a type of building which people live in and which usually stays in one place, but which can be moved using a vehicle or sometimes its own engine

HOUSEBOAT a boat which people use as their home, often kept in one place on a river

TENT a shelter made of cloth, which you can fold up and carry with you and which is supported by poles and ropes

LIGHTHOUSE a tower built next to the ocean that has a powerful flashing light at the top to show ships where to go or to warn them of danger

PALACE a large house that is the official home of a king, queen or other person of high social rank

VILLA a fairly large house, especially one that is used for holidays

FLAT / US APARTMENT a set of rooms for living in, especially on one floor of a building

MANSION a very large expensive house (usually with 10 bedrooms)
