President Houston’s 1st Term He tried to prevent another war with Mexico by avoiding conflict with the Mexican citizens. Houston wanted better support so he applied for annexation to join Texas. Houston did not have time or the money for creating schools in Texas.

President Lamar’s1st Term Lamar caused problems with the Mexican government. Lamar thought that sending rebels to revolt in Mexico would help create a border between Texas and Mexico. Lamar’s actions only increased tension between Mexico and Texas. Lamar also upset New Mexico by assuming that the land west of Texas, along the Rio Grande, was Texas’s.

Warm-UP 11/4/16 Your new President of Texas liked quiet reading. He did not shy away from conflicts with Mexico and the Native Texans. He wanted to get rid of ALL Native Texans meaning Native Americans and the original Mexican settlers. He spent LARGE sums of borrowed money on military expeditions putting Texas into more debt. He wanted Texas to remain independent and expand its borders even though the Texan citizens were barely making it with what they had. Now that you know about him answer the following question in your binder in 3-5 sentences. Would you still choose Lamar to be the president? Why or why not?

Now it is your turn to find the information!!! Good Luck!

Presidents Venn Diagram Your group will be given stack of statements about the president's. Both partners will sort the statements. The statements will be for Houston or Lamar. Your will have 5 minutes to sort out the statements. Make sure you have two different rows. One for each president After the 5 minutes we will check as a class.
