Class One – Training, locations, and a little housekeeping Classroom training sessions will be held at the Burkett Service Center, or the Mansfield Activity Center The City of Mansfield graciously allows us to utilize these facilities to enhance our training sessions. We MUST keep the rooms clean, and when we exit for the evening the rooms are to be in the same condition as they were when we arrived. Tables/chairs returned, all trash removed, etc. Please silence cell phones, and do not use them during class Side conversations will undoubtedly occur, but please keep these at a minimum, and respect others desire to hear the information being presented. Feel free to excuse yourself should you need to leave the room for any reason. This isn’t kindergarten, you don’t need to ask to go to the restroom.

Through the portal, coaches and parents can access there schedules, team rosters, etc. This is also the portal that we as umpires will use to submit our availability, review our assignments, and to accept those assignments. heyblue.org - This is Gary's website. He maintains this website as a resource point for training materials, possible schedule postings, and required communications to all of his umpire teams.

Class One – Required Information – Taxes We cannot assist you with how you calculate or pay your taxes at the end of the year. However . . . As you are self-employed (sole proprietorship) in the role as an umpire, then there are many expenses that can be used as deductions or adjustments when filing your taxes. Examples are: Vehicle mileage, both to and from a game location Registration fees Camp or clinic expenses Equipment and uniforms

Class One – Background check All umpires must have a Background Check on file with the MYBA. The Background Check is good for one year. MYBA covers the cost for this process. Begin by going to the MYBA homepage myba.com On the left side of the page, click the selection for “Approved To Coach” This will open a page that contains the full list of MYBA participants that have passed the Background Check and are approved to be on the filed. If your name is not on the list, you MUST submit a Background Check Click on the “Background Check” tab on the left side of the screen. Follow the instructions given and the process will go smoothly. Submitting your information literally takes only 2 or 3 minutes Do not attempt to perform this process on your phone or and Ipad. Due to page security and pop up conflicts, phone and Ipad use are not recommended

Class One - Registration In order for Gary and Christi to see your availability and assign you games, you must be registered in the system accessed by the MYBA portal (my.myba.com) Gary and Christi will set you up in the system based on the information you list in your Umpire Information Sheet (name, email address, phone number) Note concerning email addresses: There is a potential security/permissions overlap with Yahoo email addresses. Establish an email address that does not use yahoo mail. If you have been previously registered with the MYBA, for example as a coach, you may need to set up a different email address for your umpire account.

Class One - Registration When you open the my.myba.com page, it should appear as seen below Click on the “Login” field in the upper right-hand corner Complete the fields for your email address and password, and click Login. If this is your first time to login, you will have the opportunity to create your password Passwords do not have specific rules about length or types of characters Gary and Christi do NOT know your password. If you forget it, don’t ask them what it is

Class One – Availability and Acceptance There will now be an “Umpires” tab at the top of the screen Clicking on the “Umpires” tab will open your specific umpire page. Here you can indicate what days (times) you will be available to call games for the week FOLLOWING the current week. Note in the following example, if games were assigned for THIS week, February 2nd through the 10th, they would be listed at the top. The bottom section is to submit availability for the following week, February 11th through the 17th

Class One – Availability and Acceptance You should submit your availability each week, as early in the week as possible. Christi starts filling game assignments in as soon as she gets submitted availabilities. So the sooner you turn in your availability, the higher the likelihood of being assigned games. If you feel you can be available for a singular game time, email Christi and let her know. For example, if you don’t get out of a school activity early enough to make a 6:00 game, but you would be able to cover one at 7:45, let her know The week we can submit for rolls forward each Sunday evening about 8:00 p.m. Assigned games will be posted by 6:00 p.m. each Friday. This means your assigned games screen will regenerate on Friday evening. Print out or take a screen capture of your schedule so you will have your assignments for Saturday. You must accept your game schedule by the end of the following Sunday. If you do not accept your assigned games by that time, you are at risk of them being assigned to another umpire.

Class One – Availability and Acceptance In the event that your availability changes: If you have not yet accepted your schedule, text and/or email Christi so she can make changes Note: If you repeatedly “forget” you were not available for a day you had previously said you could work, this could lead to you not be assigned games. It is very difficult to arrange the proper umpires with the proper games. Your failure to properly submit your availability makes this process even more difficult If it is during the week, more than a day away from your assigned game, text and/or email Gary and Christi so they can make changes If this change is on the day of your assignment, CALL Christi as quickly as possible. Gary works a full-time job, and may not be able to respond to your change as quickly as needed. Texts and emails take time to transfer. Do not allow this delay to affect the schedule. Make the CALL

Class One - Equipment When calling Coach Pitch, the following uniform/equipment items are required Grey slacks Powder blue and/or black shirt Solid black hat (blue acceptable) Ball bag Ball/strike indicator Plate Brush Black belt Watch Ink pen

Class One - Equipment Base pants have slimmer, “regular fitting” legs. They will appear much like regular slacks. The leg width will likely not go over shin guards, thus they should not be worn for plate work. Plate pants have much wider leg widths to accommodate shin guards. Combo pants are, understandably, between the two styles in leg width. They may not appear as clean and neat, but they are advantageous none the less. Black belt All umpire pants will be un-hemmed when purchased. Do not order/buy a pair of umpire pants and expect to wear them immediately. They are left un-hemmed so they can be hemmed to a particular umpires preference.

Class One - Equipment Umpire shirts can come in a variety of styles and colors The important part for the MYBA is that you and your partner have the same color shirt. We prefer that we do NOT have a situation where you are wearing powder blue and your partner is wearing black If you are both wearing the same color, but one of you has the “pro style” with a separate color piping or insert (far right above), don’t worry

Class One - Equipment The length of the hat bill is designated by the number of stitch lines it has. The more stitches, the longer the bill. This way you can have a longer bill (6 or 8 stitch) to wear in the field, but a shorter one (4 stitch) to wear behind the plate and under your mask. The important aspect is for the bill to be short enough that you can remove your mask and NOT have your hat come off, as this could block your vision. This aspect only comes in to affect when calling age levels 9U and above)

Class One - Equipment Plain black shoes are preferred. As you can see in the pictures above, many professional umpires wear shoes that have white trim or white lettering What we do NOT want is bright and/or mixed colors. Please do not wear shoes that have orange, green, bright blue, etc.
