Energetic Connections Matter and Energy Science Q2 Pt1 Energetic Connections Matter and Energy

Things to do Flocabulary – Energy Study Jam – Energy and Matter

Energy Energy can be described as potential and kinetic energy. Energy is a property of all matter. A change is involved in energy transfer.

Energy The total amount of energy remains constant in all transformations. Change in the state of matter  motion and arrangement of atoms. Change of statemass is conserved.

Energy Energy is involved in all changes of matter. Energy is transferred constantly

Potential energy Potential energy is energy that is stored and used later The object has the ability to do work/ make things happen Ex: A stretched rubber band has the ability to do work.

Potential energy Types of Potential Energy: Gravitational, elastic, and chemical Do Brain Pop on Potential Energy.

Force A force is a push or pull on something it is needed to change the motion of something. (From resting to moving.) Weight -force of gravity acting on an object. Newton- is a metric unit that measures force.

Mass has an effect! Mass- Is the measure of the amount of matter in an object. The mass of an object remains the same no matter what the gravitational pull. Ex: Astronauts on the moon have the same mass on the moon, even though they are floating!

Motion Motion is a changing of position. It can be described as changes of distance, time and/or direction.

Variable Variables- are the properties of things that can be changed or vary in an investigation. Examples are: changing of the time, distance or temperature. Think about an experiment with the ramps. The variable was the height of the ramp.

Energy transfer When energy is transferred from one system to another, the energy input equals energy output Conservation of Energy -Energy is neither created nor destroyed

Kinetic energy -energy that is involved in something that is moving converting potential energy to another form. Anything that is moving has kinetic energy.

examples OF KINETIC ENERGY Wind Rolling objects Falling objects Flying objects Anything that is moving

Kinetic Energy Do Brain Pop on Kinetic Energy.

Energy transfer Different forms of energy can be transferred from place to place by… Radiation Conduction Convection

Radiation Radiation -a form of energy transfer that involves light and heat, such as the radiant energy of the sun.

conduction Conduction - a form of energy transfer that involves the passing of heat energy directly between two objects that are touching.

convection Convection - a form of energy transfer that involves the transfer of heat energy through a gas or liquid.

Heat transfer The transfer of heat from warmer objects to colder due to the motion of molecules. Heat energy- energy associated in the difference in temperature between objects. (Heat can change things!)

Study Jam - Heat

matter Matter changes from state to state through the motion and arrangement of molecules. Matter is composed of tiny particles in motion. Matter is neither created nor destroyed.

States of matter Solid – close particles Liquid – some space Gas Add energy to become liquid Liquid – some space Add energy to become a gas Subtract Energy to become a solid Gas Far apart, fast moving particles Subtract energy to become a liquid

Study Jam – Solids, Liquids and Gases

mass The mass remains the same as matter changes from state to state.
