To Be Eligible Under 36 CFR 60 a Property Must: Meet basic guidelines for age and resource category Be associated with an important historic context Retain historic integrity of those features necessary to convey its significance. Source: National Register Bulletin 15: How To Apply The National Register Criteria for Evaluation

Resource and Age Category Eligible Resource Category: “A property must be classified as a district, site, building, structure or object” The property qualifies as a “Building” Eligible Age: The Dance Street Studio was constructed in 1910 and meets the 50 year age criteria Source: National Register Bulletin 15: How To Apply The National Register Criteria for Evaluation

Eligibility: Criterion A That are associated with events that have made a significant contribution to the broad patterns of our history Criterion/Category A – The Dance Street Studio building is NOT associated with an important historic context. It has primarily been used as a warehouse, manufacturing and fabrication, and event venue but was never associated with a long term occupancy by a specific business that had an impact on the historic development of Spokane.

Eligibility: Criterion b B. That are associated with the lives of significant persons in or past (NPS Bulletin 15). The builder and original owner of the building, James Hunter, did not appear to use the building in his business. He is noted as an early merchant in Spokane who supplied the mines of southern British Columbia, and was president of two investment companies, none of which operated from the building. Thus, although Hunter built and owned the building, it does not have a strong association with a person historical significance in Spokane, and does not appear eligible under Criterion B.

Eligibility – criterion C The building at 433 W Dean has been subject to significant changes to the primary façade throughout the years reducing the integrity to such a degree that this simple building no longer conveys historic configuration. Alterations to the front façade windows, both the bricking-in of openings and the replacement of original sash with fixed single-panel internal grid windows, have adversely affected the integrity of the original design under Criterion C.

Character Defining Features Storefront configuration changed from central entry loading bay to a modern aluminum storefront Window openings on second floor are intact, all other openings have changed All windows have been replaced with fixed, internal grid glass or bricked-in Stepped parapet remains “Ultimately, the question of integrity is answered by whether or not the property retains the identity for which it is significant.” (NR Bulletin 15)

Summary Property is an Eligible Resource Category? Yes Property is an Eligible Age? Fit Within a Historic Context? No Integrity?

Staff Recommendation The building at 433 W Dean is not eligible for listing on the Spokane and/or National Register based on the National Register Criteria for Evaluation (36 CFR 60 or Spokane Register Criteria) This simple industrial property does not retain enough integrity from its period of construction to meet the criteria for its architecture
