Warm Up What are some other forms of government you know about? 2. What is one positive way and one negative way they compare with democracy? 3. Do you agree with Churchill’s view of democracy? Why or why not? In other words, democracy is the worst form of government, but it is the only form of government that works in the long run

Wednesday, September 6, 2017 Objective: Students will be able to describe and evaluate the different classifications of government. Purpose: Societies have addressed the need for a government in many different ways, some which are radically different than our own government.

How Governments are Classified Who participates in the governing process in the U.S. government?  How is power distributed within the U.S. government?  Does the power lie with one group of officials or with several groups?  How do the legislative and executive branches of the U.S. government relate?

Who can Participate Democracy political authority rests in the hands of the people the government must have the approval of the people to govern the government is to serve the interests of the people Democratic government derives its power from the people but can be either direct or indirect democracy. Why might indirect democracy be better for a larger population?

Who can Participate Dictatorship Government that is not accountable to the people Often exercises complete authority over all aspects of society Force is used to maintain power

There are different forms of government all over the world There are different forms of government all over the world. People express their will differently in each. How does each government's reaction differ to expressions of will?

Power can be distributed between central (national) and local governments in three different ways. Which diagram best describes the distribution of power in the United States?

Leader of Government Presidential System chosen by the people, independently of the legislature holds office for a fixed term has a number of significant powers that are not subject to the direct control of the legislative branch Examples: United States, Mexico, Brazil

In a presidential democracy, voters elect both the legislative and executive branches of government. How is the executive branch related to the legislative branch?

Leader of Government Parliamentary System led by a Prime Minister and the cabinet, who are members of the legislature cabinet is required to have the support of more than half of the members of the legislature (this is called confidence) remain in office only as long as their policies and administration have the support of a majority in parliament if the government loses confidence, a new government must be formed or elections must be held Examples: Canada, Italy, United Kingdom

Quickwrite Summary Which system do you think works better, a presidential system or a parliamentary system? Explain your choice. Also, think about the current functioning of the U.S. when writing your answer.
