What is Geography? Why Study Geography? The study of the physical features of the earth and its atmosphere, and how human activity affects and is affected by the earth. Understanding Geography will give us context to understand historical events; Where they happened, when they happened, and how the environment influenced them. Why Study Geography?

The 5 Themes of Geography 5 Core concepts that can answer the 3 big questions of Geography Where am I? Location What is it like here? Place Region How did it get this way? (or What made it like this?) Human-Environment Interaction Movement

2 Ways to Describe Location Where Am I? The precise spot where you are on Earth. 2 Ways to Describe Location Exact Location: Man-made spot, like an address or Latitude-Longitude lines. Relative Location: Position identified using landmark. -Landmark: Natural or Man-Made object that stays in place.

What is it like here? Two Themes Place Region Two ways to describe a Place or Region Nature Landforms: Mountains, trees, water, etc. Climate: Rainy, dry, sunny, cold winters, etc. People Culture: Religion, traditions, hobbies, etc. Race, ages, sexes, population, etc. Two Themes Place Region Place describes a small area, region describes a large area
