Frangela Toto & Iotua Itimwemwe First Regional Technical Meeting on Coastal Fisheries KIRIBATI PRESENTATION Frangela Toto & Iotua Itimwemwe

Presentation Outline Data currently collected in Kiribati Method used in Collection data Challenges New Idea or Innovation Q&A

Data Collected in Kiribati Social Economic Artisanal Tuna Creel Survey Marine Product Marine Species Export Fish Landing

Method Data Collection Interviews Social Economic Questionnaires and Surveys Fish landing, Marine Product, Artisanal Tuna, Creel Survey Documents and Records Marine Species Export

Challenges Delay in postal services (Poor communication). Hard to get a Good collaboration with fisher in the process of data collection, particularly the arrival date & time. Shortage of Fisheries officer especially on the outer island. Data Accuracy – data provided by fisheries assistant is not accurate Duplication of work – data entered again while receiving via postal

New Idea or Innovation E-reporting based on Smartphone Application developed recently Smartfish (Fisherman App - Complete) Submit Catch Date, hrs spent, fish method, fish species Check Weather update, moon phase, tide -

New Idea or Innovation E-reporting based on Smartphone Application developed recently Smartfish (App for Public – not yet completed) Notify user/public location and fish species available on the market at current time Current Fisher benefit: - help them in marketing their catch's Alternative if above not work: - free data, fishing gear discount, free repair of boat

New Idea or Innovation E-reporting email via VHF radio (proposing) Outer island that is not accessible to cellular network will be using VHF radio to send data via email. Email message will automatically retrieve and entered into the current system.
