How did the Encomienda System impact the Americas? Essential Question How did the Encomienda System impact the Americas? On the next slide, let’s read the definition of Encomienda System and determine what it means.

Encomienda System Established 1512 The encomienda system was created by the Spanish to control and regulate American Indian labor and behavior during the colonization of the Americas. Under the encomienda system, conquistadors and other leaders (encomenderos) received grants of a number of Indians, from whom they could exact “tribute” in the form of gold or labor. The encomenderos were supposed to protect and Christianize the Indians granted to them, but they most often used the system to effectively enslave the Indians and take their lands.

Make a Prediction: When many of the Natives die from European diseases, where do you think the Spanish will get people from to do the labor in the fields?

Blendspace Work to analyze the passages, documents, and video in Blendspace. Answer the questions in the document in Google Classroom When you finish . . . Work on AOW or Explorer Desktop Project
