An IL-1β-Dependent Switch in Innate Mucosal Immunity? James P. Di Santo  Immunity  Volume 32, Issue 6, Pages 734-736 (June 2010) DOI: 10.1016/j.immuni.2010.06.012 Copyright © 2010 Elsevier Inc. Terms and Conditions

Figure 1 Models for Development of IL-22-Producing Innate Lymphoid Cells versus Classical NK Cells in Secondary Lymphoid Tissues and Mucosal Associated Lymphoid Tissue “Dual function” model (left) proposes that developing cells pass through an IL-22+ stage that can be expanded through IL-1β from dendritic cells (DCs). Further maturation of IL-22+ cells to lytic IFN-γ+ NK cells is inhibited by IL-1β but promoted by IL-15. “Dual precursor” model (right) proposes distinct dedicated precursors for IL-22+ ILC and classical NK cells that are driven by IL-1β and IL-15, respectively.
