Addition and Subtraction Adding money using column addition Objectives Day 1 Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition. Day 2 Before teaching, be aware that: On Day 1 & 2 children will need mini-whiteboards and pens. Year 4

Addition and Subtraction Adding money using column addition Starters Day 1 Add any pair of 2-digit numbers (pre-requisite skills) Day 2 Use place value to add and subtract (pre-requisite skills) Choose starters that suit your class by dragging and dropping the relevant slide or slides below to the start of the teaching for each day. Year 4

Addition and Subtraction Adding money using column addition Starter Day 1 Add any pair of 2-digit numbers Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 1 Children play a game in pairs. Each child rolls a 0–9 dice twice to make a 2-digit number, i.e. if one child rolls a 3 and 7 they could choose to make 37 or 73. If the other child rolls a 4 and a 9 they could choose to make 49 or 94. They find the total of their two 2-digit numbers. How many can they complete in 5 minutes? They score 1 point for each total, but an extra point for any total over 50. Year 4

Addition and Subtraction Adding money using column addition Starter Use place value to add and subtract Pre-requisite skills – to use this starter, drag this slide to the start of Day 2 Write on the board some additions/subtractions that children can use place value to answer, e.g. 358 + 200, 647 – 20, 351 + 110, 872 – 610 (no exchanging or moving digits across place value columns). Children work in pairs to answer as many as they can in 5 minutes. Discuss how these are ‘low work’ calculations! Year 4

Addition and Subtraction Adding money using column addition Objectives Day 1 Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition. Year 4

Day 1: Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition. We can use expanded addition to add £3.24 and £2.58. £3 20p 4p + £2 50p 8p 10p Partition the amounts into £s, 10ps and 1ps. Line the columns up neatly and don’t forget a blank ‘waiting line’ under the second number. £5 80p 2p £5 + 80p + 2p = £5.82 Next add the 10ps. 20p + 50p + 10p = ? Add the 1ps. 4p + 8p = 12p. We put 10p under the 10ps in the waiting line and 2p under the 1ps in the answer line. Then the £s. £3 + £2 = ? Finally recombine the pounds and pence. Year 4

Try adding 324 and 258 using compact addition. Day 1: Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition. 3 2 4 Try adding 324 and 258 using compact addition. + 2 5 8 1 5 8 2 Let’s check through that... 1s £3. 2 4 10s + £2. 5 8 1 100s £5. 8 2 We can add £3.24 and £2.58 in the same way, without partitioning the amounts…! Year 4

Day 1: Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition. Work in pairs, one to use expanded addition and the other to use compact addition to work out £4.26 + £2.37. Did you get the same answer? Let’s check through… £4 20p 6p £4. 2 6 + £2 30p 7p + £2. 3 7 10p 1 £6 60p 3p £6. 6 3 £6 + 60p + 3p = £6.63 Who can talk us through the expanded addition? Who can talk us through the compact addition? Year 4

Now swap roles to work out £5.45 + £3.25. Day 1: Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition. Now swap roles to work out £5.45 + £3.25. Did you get the same answer? Let’s check through… £5 40p 5p £5. 4 5 + £3 20p 5p + £3. 2 5 10p 1 £8 70p 0p £8. 7 £8 + 70p + 0p = £8.70 Who can talk us through the expanded addition? Who can talk us through the compact addition? Year 4

Day 1: Add amounts of money using expanded and compact addition. £4.17 + £2.76. What is the approximate total? What would each amount be to the nearest pound? Now find the exact total and compare with your approximation. You can choose which way to do it… Let’s check through... £4 10p 7p £4. 1 7 + £2 70p 6p + £2. 7 6 10p 1 £6 90p 3p £6. 9 3 Children can now go on to do differentiated GROUP ACTIVITIES. You can find Hamilton’s group activities in this unit’s TEACHING AND GROUP ACTIVITIES download. WT: Use expanded addition then compact addition to add amounts of money. ARE: Use expanded addition and compact addition to add amounts of money. GD: Use expanded addition and compact addition to add amounts of money, plus challenge. £6 + 90p + 3p = £6.93 Who can talk us through the expanded addition? Who can talk us through the compact addition? Year 4
