1.1 The Nature Of Science A. Scientific Thought 1. Scientific thought involves making observations of the world around you 2. Skepticism a. questioning or doubtful attitude 3. Scientists require evidence, not opinions, to support ideas 4. Many scientific discoveries lead to new technologies & medical treatments

A. Truths that are valid everywhere in the universe 1. ex. – II. Universal Laws A. Truths that are valid everywhere in the universe 1. ex. – III. Science & Ethics A. Ethics are a system of moral principles & values B. Scientists conducting experiments must report only accurate data & allow peers to review their work Law of Gravity Law of Conservation of Energy

C. Unethical Work Complications 1. Can cause other scientists to waste time & resources 2. False claims of new cures can cause people with an illness to be in danger D. Scientists must adhere to strict laws & guidelines when conducting experiments IV. Why Study Science? A. Makes take better care of your health, be a wiser consumer, and become a better- informed citizen
