AVID’s mission – Mr. Butterfield AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.

What is AVID? – Mr. Butterfield A school wide college readiness system A structured approach to rigorous curriculum A direct support structure for first generation college students Professional learning for educators

Why does AVID work?–Mr. Butterfield Places AVID students in rigorous curriculum and gives them the support to achieve Provides the explicit “hidden curriculum” of schools Provides a team of students for positive peer identification Redefines the teacher’s role as that of student advocate

AVID Basics – Mrs. Crawbuck Rigorous academic curriculum College preparatory concentration Support other academic subjects Focus on critical thinking and analysis Build student responsibility and self- discipline Middle School vs. High School

The Magic Ingredients – Mrs. Crawbuck Student buy-in Parent support You make it work! Advancement Via Individual Determination Success is not overnight, but develops over time We won’t let them give up! AVID Contracts

Writing: quickwrites, practice essays, Cornell Notes AWICOR – Mr. Ferrel Writing: quickwrites, practice essays, Cornell Notes Inquiry: levels of questioning, Socratic Seminars Collaboration: tutorials, group work, teambuilding Organization: the AVID binder, Binder Check Reading: AVID Weekly, critical reading practice AVID strives to support all other academic classes

AVID Strong - Mr. Ferrel We believe in our students We believe in a team approach We need to team with parents in order to make the AVID program successful! We believe that AVID gives students the skills they need to succeed!

The Road to College – Ms. Moshtagh Help with college applications Editing of college essays Postsecondary educational options Preparation for the rigor of college Organization, note-taking, time management, and writing Sophisticated thinking, inquiry, and critical thinking

Student Testimonials – Ms. Moshtagh "Before AVID I was really unorganized. . . The AVID binder helps me to stay organized, keep my papers together, and get assignments turned in.  Now I don't lose my homework in my backpack."  -Dev Naik ‘15  “TRFs and tutorials help me get questions answered in a way where I have to really think about it; it's not just given to me."   - Jaclyn Long ’15 "The most useful part of AVID is writing.  My essays have been drastically better and my vocabulary has expanded tenfold." -Anthony Faccini ’15 "AVID has made me want to become a better student and motivated me to do better in school and reach my full potential.“ -Logan Winn ‘14

AVID Graduate Testimonial “I got out of it what I put in. Everyone around me is so overwhelmed, like nobody expected college to be hard, and no one ever learned how to take notes. No one knows how to organize each class, or read through a text and annotate important parts, but I do! Because I had a good AVIDtude in high school and it has really paid off." -Hayley Long Foothill class of 2013 University of Arizona class of 2017

AVID Senior Data – Mr. Destro Based on 2015 AVID Senior Data - a study of 40,122 AVID seniors 92% reported plans to attend a postsecondary institution 61% to a four-year college 31% to a two-year college 77% reported taking at least one rigorous high school course (e.g., AP, IB, or Cambridge), with 65% taking the corresponding exam

What is college readiness? - Mr. Destro the level of preparation a student needs in order to enroll and succeed—without remediation—in credit-bearing general education coursework at a college or university. students understand what is expected in a college course, can cope with the content knowledge presented, can take away from the course the key intellectual lessons, and have both the mindset and disposition necessary to enable understanding. AVID helps students develop a vision for their future, gain confidence in their abilities, and take ownership of their learning.
