What is the self concept The self concept describes The perception or image we hold about ourselves We may hide this from others It is what we believe about ourselves.

When is it formed? as soon as you are born through childhood it continues to develop throughout our lives

How is it formed? From messages we receive from the world around us Life experiences Positive regard from significant others Family, Friends , teachers. Conditions of worth It is continuously reinforced by interactions with others.

Conditions of worth are: A second valuing process based on the evaluations of significant others in our lives that we internalise and own for ourselves. They can help and hinder the growth process

Conditions of worth Positive regard is a learned need developed in early childhood They are conditions bestowed on you By others to make you feel valued / Loved and accepted Each child needs feel Love and acceptance Our conditions of worth will affect our self-esteem

What are the components of the self concept? Physical Social Emotional Academic

The physical Self: ( relates to that which is concrete) what we look like our sex height weight health fitness the clothes we wear what kind of car we drive what kind of home we live in

The Social Self The social self-concept describes how we relate to other people. Family Making friends Close relationships

Intellectual Self a general academic self-concept of how good we are overall More specifically in maths science, language arts, social science etc

Emotional Self Self awareness understanding your own feelings Working with the feelings of others Getting on with others especially if they are sad/angry. Concentrating on what you need to do.

What does the self concept involve? How clever we think we are? Our ability to take risks The Self concept How we communicate with others? How we cope with problems? How popular we are with others? How we apply ourselves at work and in academic areas?
