Story-Literary Elements

Plot Structure Freytag's Pyramid is a way to analyze a plot that consists of five elements in an ascending and descending manner.

Exposition The exposition present readers with the setting and introduces all of the main characters in the story.

Rising action During rising action, the basic conflict is complicated by the introduction of related secondary conflicts, including various obstacles that frustrate the protagonist's attempt to reach his goal.

Climax The turning point of the story which marks a change for the protagonist. Simply put, this is where the main part happens or the most dramatic part.

Falling action During the falling action the conflict between the protagonist and the antagonist unravels, with the protagonist winning or losing against the antagonist. In summary: The falling action is that part of the story in which the main part (the climax) has finished and you're heading to the conclusion.

Denouement The dénouement are the events between the falling action and the actual ending scene of a narrative. It serves as the conclusion of the story. Conflicts are resolved, creating normality for the characters and a sense of catharsis, or release of tension and anxiety, for the reader.

More on Denouement More modern works may have no dénouement, because of a quick or surprise ending such as the arrival of adults in Lord of the Flies. On the other hand, an example of a modern work with a particularly elaborate dénouement is The Lord of the Rings.

Mini Assignment Think of a fable, or children's’ story and analyze it: Identify literary elements: Point of view Setting Characters Theme Label events in pyramid plot structure Exposition Rising action Climax Falling action Denouement

Lastly, Types of Plots…. Chronological Flashback In media res (in the middle of things, when the story starts in the middle of the action) Flashback…Christmas Carol In media res…Iliad, Twilight, Pulp Fiction, To Kill a Mckingbird
