The Iceman

What year and where did the hikers stumble on a body of a man? The hikers stumbled on a body of a man in the Alpine region, in 1991.

2. How old is the mummy? The mummy is 5300 years old.

3. What Age is he from? He is from the Stone Age. 4. When did he live? He lived between 3350 BC and 3100 BC.

5. Who studied the mummy? Archaeologists studied the mummy.

6. What is the mummy’s name? He was named Otzi or the Iceman. 7. Where did he come from? He came from northern Italy.

8. Describe the mummy. He was about forty-six years old. He was about 1.6 meters tall, had blue eyes and long, dark brown hair.

9. How did the mummy change our ideas about the Stone Age? Archaeologists thought that copper didn’t arrive in Europe until 2000 BC. However, Otzi was carrying the copper axe 1300 years earlier.

10. How did he die? He was shot by an arrow.

11. List the mummy’s tools, gear and clothes. A copper axe, an unstrung bow with quiver and arrows, a flint knife, leather shoes, a woven grass cloak, and goat skin leggings

12. Why did Hans and the other scientists go to the Alps? They wanted to find out whether Otzi was a shepherd. 13. Was Otzi a shepherd or a farmer? He was a farmer. 14. How do scientists know? The scientist made an experiment. They were dressed as Otzi and went into the mountains. The shoes were wet and worn out. If he had been the shepherd, his shoes would have endured the snow and the terrain. Also, they found pieces of corn in his clothes.

15. Why was Otzi in the mountains? There are two ideas: He fled up the mountain because of the fight in the village. He took his goats and sheep into the mounatins.
