Using a Punnett Square. What is a PUNNETT SQUARE? A tool to predict the probability of certain traits in offspring that shows the different ways alleles.
Punnett Squares When we know information about the genetic makeup of two parents, we can predict the genetic makeup of any possible offspring created between.

Genotype vs Phenotype Genotype Phenotype The alleles that an organism has for a particular trait. Example: AA, Aa, aa Phenotype The observable traits of an organism. Brown and blue eyes are phenotypes.

Homozygous vs Heterozygous Homozygous: a genotype in which both alleles are the same AA or aa Heterozygous: a genotype in which the alleles are different Aa

Punnett Square A tool used to visualize all the possible combinations of alleles from the parents.

Making a Punnett Square Is One Way to Determine Likely Outcome of Genetic Cross

How to make a Punnett Square Draw a square and divide it into four sections Write the letters that represent alleles from one parent along the top of the box Write the letters that represent alleles from the other parent along the side of the box To make the cross bring one allele down and one over so that each of the four squares has now 2 alleles showing the genotypes that are possible with the cross
