States of Matter 2016-2017

Phases of Matter Identify which box represents a solid, liquid or gas. -Holds Shape -Fixed Volume Liquid -Shape of container -Fixed Volume Gas -Shape of Container -Volume of Container

Particles Submicroscopic particles are able to vibrate about their fixed positions. What happens when we add heat??? Vibrations increase At a certain temperatures they have enough energy to disrupt the fixed positions (changing the phase) Adding heat: Solid  Liquid  Gas

Baking Soda lab Lab Prep Table Purpose: To collect qualitative data to determine what will happen when baking soda is heated. By the end of today you need to have a 2-D schematic of your apparatus. Lab Prep Table

Agenda 1/18/17 Two things… Baking soda lab How to use the Bunsen burner What does 0.5 cm of baking soda look like? Baking soda lab HW: Conclusion questions for the baking soda lab

Agenda 1/19/17 Baking soda lab discussion Quiz Separations Notes

Baking Soda Lab Discussion Data Describe what happened to the water level in the bottle? Why did the water level change? Describe what the baking soda looks like after it is heated. When is the experiment over?
