Presentation transcript:

Carbon hotspot: reducing inhalers Aims Why Reducing air pollution emissions from NHS business travel by 20% between now and 2023/24 Develop low carbon, low air pollution sustainable care models that provide clinical excellence, convenience and personalisation Work with stakeholders e.g. Local Authorities to improve air quality on and around health and care sites Engage staff and patients to be part of the journey – provide a signal that tackling this is important for all of us Air pollutants affect health; CVD, respiratory, low birth weight, lung cancer and emerging links to dementia etc. PHE, RCP and BLF reports all show the health and treatment costs of all air pollution - ~£1bn by 2030 Links between inequalities and areas of poor air quality SDU HOTT and report shows the impact of NHS travel (9.5bn miles annually) is having on health and society

How Transport: NHS working to explore efficiencies in its travel, avoiding unnecessary business mileage through digital technologies, planning and policy Develop more convenient and personalised care models that reduce patient travel 90% of NHS fleet by 2028 to be lower emissions, of which 25% will be Ultra-Low Emission Vehicles (excluding Double Crewed Ambulances) DfT funded Green Fleet Reviews and cost savings associated with EV fleet Significant uptake of EV charging points on NHS sites by 2028 Supported by Local Authorities and central government funding and support Static: Exploring with Local Authorities if/how healthcare estate can be included in Air Quality Management Zones or Clean Air Zones Phase out coal by 2023 (and heating oil as a primary fuel by 2028) on NHS sites Banning of idling vehicles on NHS health and care sites
