Asexual & Sexual Reproduction. Asexual Reproduction  Type of reproduction in which a new organism is produced from ONE parent and the offspring is identical.
Asexual Reproduction vs. Sexual Reproduction
 Sexual Reproduction – type of reproduction in which the genetic materials from two different cells combine, producing an offspring  Sperm – male sex.
Key Idea #16 All organisms have a life span and must reproduce in order to continue the species.
Reproduction of Organisms Why do living things reproduce? Why does an offspring not receive all traits of each parent? How are organisms that do not reproduce.
KEY CONCEPT Many organisms reproduce by cell division.

Asexual Reproduction Characteristics of Life: All Organisms Can Reproduce All Organisms Grow and Develop.
In asexual reproduction, are the offspring different or the same as the parent? Answer: SAME! They are clones and genetically identical.
Meiosis The “naughty” one. Video: Why reproduce? To make more offspring -> Which contributes to the population -> Which continues the to the species as.
TYPES OF. ASEXUAL REPRODUCTION Only one parent Offspring all look the same as the parents No variation in the offspring Not good chance of surviving.
 Sexual reproduction is a type of reproduction in which the genetic materials from two different cells combine, producing an offspring. Sexual reproduction.
Reproduction Introduction Asexual reproduction: 1. The prefix “A” comes from the Greek language and means without. 2.The term asexual means without to.
Sexual vs. Asexual Reproduction. Extra chromosomes allow all female lizards to reproduce without males  double their chromosomes twice before everything.
 How many parents are involved in the types of reproduction listed? ◦ Sexual Reproduction ◦ Asexual Reproduction.

Regeneration & Fragmentation Regeneration-Regrowth of body parts. Regeneration is not reproduction. Fragmentation- an organism breaks into two or more pieces (fragments) and each piece regenerates. Fragmentation is a form of reproduction.

Prefix “Bi” means TWO… Bacteria reproduces by splitting into 2! Binary Fission is… When bacteria (and some protists) divides into two bacteria. Similar to mitosis… but since bacteria do not have a nucleus, they don’t need to go through the same phases (prophase, metaphase, and anaphase) Prefix “Bi” means TWO… Bacteria reproduces by splitting into 2!

Binary Fission

Sexual Reproduction Types include: Fertilization Pollination

Fertilization Combination of sperm and egg Results in increased genetic diversity (combined traits)

Sexual- Meiosis Asexual-Mitosis Advantages Can adapt to environmental change- Some of the population may survive even after a change in environmental conditions Only one parent needed- reproduction can happen at any time. Quick- can produce a large population in a short time Offspring are genetic mix of both parents- genetic diversity/ variation in traits Does not need much energy- few resources required

Sexual- Meiosis Asexual-Mitosis Disadvantages Slow – can only produce a small population in a short time Limited ability to adapt – whole population could die off if their environment changes Lots of energy needed – must find mate before reproducing Offspring genetically identical to parents – no genetic diversity/ no variation of traits 2 parents needed - Reproduction requires both parents to be together, mature and fertile
