Honours College Philosophy of GHIS Focus: attaining in-depth knowledge of current interdisciplinary research at Utrecht University, developing skills necessary for interdisciplinary scientists and preparation for own interdisciplinary research All students follow 3 seminars (from a list of about 9) All students organize a closing seminar together 11 April 2019

Honours College Topics seminars Topics for 2017-2018 are still to be decided. Some of the topics below will return. Topics 2016-2017: Rhetoric in contemporary society The societal impact of antibiotic resistance Facilitating smart food decisions: A consumer perspective History and Fiction Transitional Justice and the Arts Public Order and Security The Complexity of Climate Change 11 April 2019

Honours College Set-up seminars Each seminar consists of four meetings. Example of the content of each meeting: Meeting 1: introduction to the research of the professor Meeting 2: in-depth discussion of current literature in the research field Meeting 3: organized by students Meeting 4: Assignment In the final seminar, organized by the students, they share their new knowledge. 11 April 2019

Selection procedure and timeline Honours College Selection procedure and timeline Application requirement: bachelor GPA of 7.0 or higher Deadline submission application form: September 10th. Interviews: September 18th and/or 19th Start first seminar: begin October 2017 Final Seminar: begin June 2018 All seminars will take place in the evening (7pm-9pm) Studyload: 7,5 ECTS NB: schedule is not yet available. Sent an email to honourscollege@uu.nl to get the latest information. Selection criteria ia GPA of 7.5 or higher, but motivation is also important. Generally I recommend to students with a 7 or higher to apply, lower grades I tend to encourage less. 11 April 2019

Students say… “The seminars challenge you to form an opinion on various societal issues. Discussing them from an interdisciplinary perspective, you will find that there is no simple solution: you need your fellow students. In these seminars everyone is motivated and well prepared, enabling in-depth discussions. That was the most interesting part of this honours programme for me.” 11 April 2019

Students say… “In my Master’s I wanted to look for a little extra. As a History student I have only associated with other Humanities students, so I thought it would be a nice challenge to work together with students of for instance Science or Psychology. Probably the best thing was the group involvement: meeting and discussing our ideas together. Moreover, what I’ve learned about speaking in public is really useful. You will notice you have to know a subject inside out to be able to speak about it in front of an audience that is not familiar with your field of research.” 11 April 2019
